- Old Dog's Back Legs Giving Out: Causes and What to Do
Back legs giving out is sudden or gradual, and the causes differ. Merck Veterinary Manual says severe disc disease needs prompt surgery, and recovery chances fall after more than 24 hours without pain sense. If the weakness came on over hours or days, call a vet now. If it crept up over months, book an exam.
- When Is a Dog Considered a Senior? Age Chart by Size
A dog is a senior in the last 25% of its estimated lifespan (AAHA, 2019), so no single age applies. Clinics quote about 7 to 8 years, and 6 to 7 for giant breeds. If your dog is within a year or two of its range, book a senior exam. Otherwise keep annual visits.
Small changes at home that keep an old dog moving
A runner on a slippery hallway, a ramp the right length for your bed, a sling for the back steps. Our guides give you every measurement in inches and centimeters and the floor space each fix takes, so you buy the right one first time.
You also get the signs that mean the problem needs a vet rather than gear, so you know which call to make.
How we research every guide
- Primary sources, linked inline. Veterinary guidelines (AAHA, WSAVA, IVETF), regulators (FDA, UK VMD, APVMA), vet schools and published trials, next to the claim they back.
- The numbers that matter. How many dogs, which ages and sizes, how long the study ran and how big the effect was.
- Dates on every page. You see when each guide was published and last updated, and when we checked each source.

Common questions
When is a dog considered a senior?
It depends on size. Large and giant breeds age faster and reach their senior years earlier than small dogs. The American Animal Hospital Association's 2019 life stage guidelines split a dog's life into five stages (puppy, young adult, mature adult, senior and end of life) and set out the care that changes at each one.
My old dog suddenly can't stand or walk. Is that an emergency?
Yes. Sudden loss of the ability to stand or walk, collapse, a seizure that won't stop or fast breathing at rest needs a vet the same day, or an emergency clinic if yours is closed.
What helps an old dog with weak back legs at home?
Grip comes first: rug runners on hard floors, toe grips or booties, and a ramp for the car and sofa. A rear-lift sling gets a big dog up steps and outside. Our mobility guides give the measurements for each.
Where do your answers come from?
Veterinary guideline bodies such as AAHA and WSAVA, regulators such as the FDA, UK VMD and APVMA, vet-school pages, the Merck Veterinary Manual and published trials. Every guide links them next to the claim they back.
